Washed by the Mediterranean and characterised by its sandy beaches, the autonomous region of Murcia is located in the southeast of Spain, a third of the Murcian region is described as flat lands or plateaux that is encapsulated by the mountainous landscape of the Penibetica and Subbetica ranges. Due to this geometry the region enjoys a microclimate of mild winters with warm summers an average of 320 days of sunshine per year, there are more sunny days in the Murcia region than any where else in Spain with an average annual temperature of 21ºC and low rainfall.

Bordered by the regions of Valencia in the east and Andalusia in the west, it is a rich and diverse 250km stretch of Mediterranean coastline, that contains a considerable number of areas of indisputable environmental interest, and many nature reserves, Coasta Calida Murcia´s coastline is rich and diverse, and remains relatively unspoilt compared to the more crowded Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca. There are areas of beautifully rugged coastline with its breathtaking views, wild coves and lively ports contrasting with gentle hidden coves of quiet beaches with crystal clear warm waters and stylish marinas.

Murcia Beach Region

Murcia Mall Whatever your pastime the region of Murcia can cater for it, from horse riding to hiking, exploring on foot, mountain biking and all the water sports you can think of as well as of course the excellent golfing facilities.

You can wind away the hours walking for miles along the level palm lined promenade stretching between the beaches on the Mar Menor, enjoying the wonderfull sea views whilst being refreshed by the gentle warm sea breeze, or visit one of the many fishing villages where you will be welcomed by a warm friendly atmosphere.

Centuries of history and numerous civilizations provide the Murcia Region with a rich historical and cultural heritage, highly represented by buildings such as the Cathedral and the Casino in the capital, the Roman Theatre in Cartagena, and the medieval castles of Lorca and Mula.

There are a good and varied selection of shops, bars, restaurants and weekly street markets. The cities of Murcia & Cartegena both boast excellent shopping facilities, San Javier is just 20 minutes drive away and has the Dos Mares shopping mall, incorporating a large supermarket, 10 pin bowling, a cinema and an extensive food hall to eat in or take aways. About 30 minutes away is the recently opened shopping mall with some 200 shops, including many U.K high street chains. This complex also provides an impressive range of restaurants, 10 pin bowling and a 6 screen cinema.

A new purpose built football stadium has been built next door, Real Murcia are now playing in the Spanish Premier League.

Just 15 minutes from the resort. The New Water park (Terra Aqua Murcia) and Animal park (Terra Natura Murcia) provide a wonderful family day out, with something for all ages.

Furthermore, today the Murcia Region is experiencing enormous growth, it is planning to become the golfing capital of Europe , while concurrently sustaining meticulous respect for the environment. Where history and architecture blend with the modern world, the friendly and helpful locals make this a place where you can truly relax and discover yourself.

Cuisine

The Murcia area is also well known for it's cuisine

The variety of landscapes helps to make this region a major producer of flowers, fruits and vegetables which enriches the dinner table, where the produce of the sea and inland go hand in hand.

Fresh Vegetables & Fruit - known as the market garden (huerta). Many of the fruit and vegetables you’ll find in supermarkets in the UK will have come from Murcia - particularly tomatoes, melons and oranges.

Without a doubt, fish or salted fish, stews and paellas are the order of the day. But why not try steamed Tuna, Mackerel, Melva, Bream, or the stews of Grey Mullet and Monkfish which are accompanied by rice, cooked in the same juice.

Watch out for the following great dishes:

  • Fig bread, a speciality of the region. They say that Asiático livens up a coffee with condensed milk, brandy and cinnamon
  • Mar Menor locally produced prawns named Caldero which was originally a seafarers dish, huevas de mújol, is also locally produced on the Mar Menor, it is a variant of caviar
  • Caldo murciano, the local soup dish
  • Ensalada Murciana style the ingredients differs on areas but a delicious salad topped with fresh tuna or cod.
  • Arroz y conejo a dish of rice with rabbit
  • Paella huertana is a vegetable paella
  • Jabalí is a dish of Wild Boar
  • Potaje, a rich stew dish
  • Habas con jamón, ham and broad beans

If you want just a tasty little morsel try Pastel de carne, little pastries filled with meat tomato and egg, and of course Tapas are a variety of tasty snacks to accompany drinks.
